Neelie, a reserved but adventurous sixteen-year-old only child who suffers from Oppositional Defiant Disorder, gets tricked into entering a portal to the immortal land of a magical race—the fae folk. Her disorder had spiraled out of control after her grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and her parents decided to accept a nineteen-year-old exchange student from Brazil—an effort to aid Neelie in improving her poor social skills. But Neelie detests the over-privileged Latina student, and the two get off to a rocky start.

The girls soon find themselves in the magical realm of Vaenhara, home to fae, fairies, dwarves, sphinxes, and many other odd and frightening creatures. They are immediately torn apart. Tohra is kidnapped by a roving flying beast and carried off to the dark and sinister Queendom of Vaen Wye, inhabited by horrifying creatures, including the queen’s genetically altered giant bird, the Shrike. She manages to stay alive long enough by herself to find an ally and form a plan to escape.

Neelie is faced with the decision to return home to her old life alone, or find a way to rescue Tohra.  She manages to obtain help from the Queen of the Vaen Barin Court, the brighter and more civilized Queendom of Vaenhara. After Neelie makes a deal with Queen Tresthien—a deal that could make or break not only Vaenhara but Earth as well—she is escorted by Sassack Soler, the Queen's right hand and less-than-friendly Grand General of the Vaen Barin Royal Army. He is less than pleased with the babysitting task he has been assigned.
